Propensity for paying the piper

The state Department of Revenue collected $73 million more in taxes than it did last August.

The $1.2 billion collected was $59 million above the department’s benchmark for the month, which is generally considered a “light month for revenue collection,” the department said.

The department said collections of withholding taxes were up significantly over last year, but sales tax collections were $4 million less than a year ago. Corporate and business taxes were up $12 million over last year.

The department expects to collect $19.8 billion in taxes during the 2008 fiscal year.
