Concerned about Worcester’s ongoing efforts to woo the Triple A minor league Pawtucket Red Sox out of his Rhode Island city, Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien is holding a press conference at noon today, in an effort to speed up legislators’ review of a proposal to build an $83-million ballpark for the team.
Rhode Island legislators are pouring over the proposal, but a vote isn’t expected until sometime next month. However, team officials have been meeting with Worcester officials about a potential move to the vacant Wyman-Gordon site in the Canal District.
Team officials, including owner Larry Lucchino, have been spotted in the city meeting with Worcester delegates. City officials have confirmed the talks and have hinted they are close to finalizing a proposal. No details have been given, but Massachusetts state economic development officials have been involved in the discussion.
“With the City of Worcester finalizing a deal to build a stadium for the PawSox, Rhode Island’s leaders must act at the start of their session,” Grebien said in a press release.
