Ozlo, a Northborough-based producer of noise-masking earbuds for sleep, is expanding its work into neuroscience research and development with the acquisition of Segotia, a neuro-audio engineering company out of Ireland.
With the purchase, Ozlo will bring Segotia’s existing research infrastructure in neuroscience and technology to further examine sleep’s impact on long-term health, chronic conditions, and human performance, according to a Jan. 6 press release from Ozlo.
By bringing this research in-house, Ozlo will be better able to understand how sleep supports physical recovery and cognitive performance, and thus, how technology can support these systems during sleep.
“By bringing brain-level insights into a consumer form factor, we can better understand sleep at scale,” Ozlo CEO N.B. Patil said in the release “This has the potential to improve recovery and performance for everyday members and to open new doors for future therapeutic applications across a wide spectrum of medical conditions. We see this as an important step in Ozlo’s long-term vision.”
Financial terms were not disclosed. WBJ has reached out to Ozlo for additional information.
Ozlo produces Sleepbuds, in-ear headphones that can sense when the user falls asleep, switching from playing media, such as music, podcasts, meditations, audiobooks, to noise-masking sounds, to prevent the user from waking up, according to the company’s website.
In October, Ozlo Sleepbuds were named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2025.
“Deep sleep is vital for physical recovery, while REM sleep is critical for cognitive function and memory consolidation. The addition of a neuroscience team enables us to leverage our unique in-ear form factor to monitor these stages with precision that ring and wrist-based trackers cannot match,” Ozlo President Charles Taylor said in the release.
Additionally, Sleepbuds track users’ sleep by logging the duration of rest, how closely bed times and wake times are aligned with set goals, and how well the user slept. The devices measure the impacts of noise, light, and temperature disruptions, returning 30-day sleep pattern trends.
“Joining Ozlo gives our team the opportunity to bring our neuroscience and audio research and technology to a much broader audience,” Culann mac Cabe, Segotia co-founder and CEO, said in the release. “Our team can now play a central role in shaping the next generation of sleep and digital health products, building on Ozlo’s incredible product platform.”
