National unemployment holds steady

The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor said today that national non-farm payroll employment was essentially unchanged last month, holding steady at 4.6 percent.

The rate held at 7.1 million, and was little changed from the same time last year.

In August, the civilian labor force stood at 152.9 million, while the workforce participation rate dropped to 65.8 percent, the bureau said. The drop in participation was due in large part to a lack of engagement by teenagers, whose participation rate fell to 39.7 percent.

Total employment stood at 145.8 million, while the employment-population ratio for August was essentially unchanged at 62.8 percent.
