Sparhawk Academy, a Millis-based private Catholic school currently serving boys in grades 3-10, is supporting the growth of its upper grades school program with the construction of a new 18,000-square-foot high school.
The new building is expected to open for the 2026-27 school year, according to a Feb. 2 press release from Hopkinton-based Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects, which is partnering with Sparhawk on the project.
Sparhawk’s Board of Trustees voted to expand the school’s grade offerings in January 2025, according to a piece written by Sparhawk Headmaster Michael Schell for The Boston Pilot, a Catholic news site. The board voted to add grade nine in fall 2025, with Sparhawk expanding to offer grades 10 to 12 over the following three years.
The new high school building will be located north of the existing Great Hall on Sparhawk’s roughly 60-acre campus at 376 Orchard St. With a barn-like architecture meant to be a tribute to traditional New England architecture, the new school will feature flexible homeroom classrooms, mentoring rooms, and administrative offices, among other features, according to the GRLA press release.
In addition to the new high school, GRLA is working with Sparhawk to explore the construction of a new sports facility and to make exterior improvements to the Great Hall, including a wraparound porch and new cladding.
Sparhawk was founded in 2018 and has 110 students, according to its website. In fiscal 2024, the school generated $3 million in revenue and held $3.7 million in net assets, according to nonprofit data tracker Guidestar.
GRLA was founded in 1976. Projects the firm has been involved in includes creating a master plan guiding growth of Worcester’s EcoTarium, designing an expansion of the American Heritage Museum on the border of Stow and Hudson, and renovating the home of the Boston Athletic Association in Hopkinton, according to its website.
