Mass. Loses Jobs, Unemployment Sticks At 6.4%

Massachusetts lost 1,400 jobs in April, but the unemployment rate remained steady at 6.4 percent, the state’s Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported today.

It also said revised numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed a decrease of 3,800 jobs in March, rather than the 5,500 initially reported.

In the first four months of the year, the Bay State gained a net 12,900 jobs. Over the past year, the state added 46,200 jobs, the state said. Unemployment last month was down two-tenths of a percentage point from a year earlier.

In April, gains came from the processional, scientific and business services (4,500 jobs), information (900), and education and health services (700) sectors.

Meanwhile, losses were reported in leisure and hospitality (1,900), financial activities (1,400), trade, transportation and utilities (1,400), construction (600), and manufacturing (300).
