The average gas price in Massachusetts has surged 40 cents a gallon over the last seven weeks, after a jump of 8 cents in the past week.
AAA Northeast reported Monday that its weekly survey of prices found gas averaging $2.08 per gallon. That’s up from $1.68 per gallon back on Feb. 29, when prices had fallen for 12 straight weeks.
At this time a year ago, the average prices of a gallon of gas in Massachusetts was $2.46, or 38 cents a gallon higher than currently.
“High fuel demand, declining refinery production and rising oil costs have pushed prices higher,” Mary Maguire, director of public and legislative affairs for AAA Northeast, said in a statement.
AAA survey participants found gas for as low as $1.91 per gallon and as high as $2.29 a gallon.
