Local Comp. Costs Up By 3.1%

Total compensation costs for workers in the Boston area grew by 3.1 percent for the year that ended June 30, outpacing the national growth of 2.3 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Wages and salaries, a component of total compensation, grew at a 2.7-percent pace.

The Detroit area posted a 4.9 percent annual gain, the largest increase in the nation.

The smallest annual increase was recorded in the Atlanta area, where compensation costs increased just 1.3 percent.

For this measure, the Boston area includes Worcester, Middlesex, Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk and Plymouth counties in Massachusetts as well as Belknap, Hillsborough, Merrimack, Rockingham and Strafford counties in New Hampshire.
