Hudson-based defense firm The Entwistle Co. has acquired The Hales Group, a collection of North Carolina businesses supporting U.S. Navy submarines and aircraft carriers.
The acquisition positions Entwistle to pursue larger defense programs and support growth through expanded capabilities, President Wade Knudson said in a company announcement Friday.
The Hales Group has worked to support U.S. Navy submarines and aircraft carriers through its work with Newport News Shipbuilding. The firm has more than 150,000 square feet of fabrication space on a 68-acre site in North Carolina.
The Hales Group’s portfolio includes Structural Coatings, focused on liquid-applied coatings, fireproofing and metallizing; Structural Coatings Hertford, specializing in blast cleaning and coating steel products; Structural Steel Products, a fabricator of bridges and other transportation-related infrastructure; and The Hales Co., a trucking firm.
Founded in 1981 by Ray and Trudy Hales, The Hales Group will operate as a standalone subsidiary of Entwistle.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Founded in 1918, Entwistle is a manufacturer of parts for a number of military weapons and platforms, including the tail fairings of Joint Direct Attack Munition guidance kits, which turn unguided bombs into GPS-guided bombs, and torpedo wire coils used in Mark 48 Torpedoes. The company manufactures jet blast deflectors and other infrastructure featured on U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.
Entwistle was founded in Rhode Island but moved to Hudson in 1970. The firm has an additional location in Danville, Virginia.
