About eight months after the Herb Chambers Cos. dealership network was sold to an Atlanta firm, the company is closing its Maserati and Alfa Romeo dealerships in Millbury.
News of the closure was first shared via an email to customers in early March, according to multiple posts from customers on Reddit. When reached by phone, a worker at the dealership confirmed the Maserati and Alfa Romeo dealerships at the site will close on Wednesday, although the neighboring Herb Chambers Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM FIAT of Millbury will remain open.
Both the Maserati and Alfa Romeo dealerships are located at 2 Latti Farm Road in Millbury.
The closure comes after Herb Chambers sold his Somerville-based dealership empire for $1.45 billion in July to Asbury Automotive, a publicly traded Fortune 500 company based in Georgia. Â
About $610 million of the purchase price came from real estate and leasehold improvements, with the firm’s 10 Central Massachusetts facilities accounting for at least $79.65 million of that price, according to Worcester District Registry of Deeds and Middlesex South Registry of Deeds records.
The Maserati and Alfa Romeo closure comes as Stellantis, the Netherlands-based company behind Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Dodge, Jeep, and other car brands, reexamines its brands amid declining sales, according to Car Dealership Guy, a news website covering the automotive industry.Â
The Millbury Maserati and Alfa Romeo dealership first opened in 2018, according to The Worcester Telegram and Gazette.
