Framingham-based GTC Biotherapeutics Inc. announced today that its partner company, LEO Pharma A/S of Denmark, enrolled their first patient in a Phase II study of its ATryn anti-coagulant treatment.
Full enrollment of about 200 patients will occur in the next twelve months, with results of the study available in the second half of 2008, the company said.
The drug is intended to treat disseminated intravascular coagulation, or DIC, in association with severe sepsis. When patients with severe sepsis develop DIC, the mortality rate is as high as 50 percent, according to company studies.
GTC estimates the potential market for the treatment could be as high as $2-3 billion per year.
