New orders for manufactured goods increased $3.5 billion, or 0.8 percent, in May, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
All but 0.2 percent of the increase was transportation-related. Orders for aircraft represented much of the gain, increasing 36.5 percent.
The increase in factory orders for May didn’t quite make up for April, which saw a 0.9-percent decrease.
Machinery saw the largest month-over-month relative increase at $600 million, or 2.3 percent.
