Third quarter mergers and acquisitions of venture-backed companies rose 5 percent compared to last year and initial public offerings rose more than fivefold, according to DowJones Venture Source.
There were 102 M&As of venture-backed companies worth a total of $5.7 billion nationwide in the quarter, which is up from 97 deals worth $3.3 billion last year.
The median amount paid for a venture-backed company was $27 million, a 23 percent increase from last year.
There were nine IPOs of venture-backed companies worth $723 million, which compares to just two worth $451 million last year.
Despite the increase in activity, DowJones Venture Source editor Scott Austin said IPOs are still performing well below expectations.
