Milford pharmaceutical manufacturer Nitto Denko Avecia will pay $858,889 in fines as part of a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over multiple alleged violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and Massachusetts hazardous waste management regulations at two facilities, the EPA said Tuesday.
In addition to the fines, the company was required to ensure it is in compliance with the relevant rules and regulations. Nitto Denko Avecia has already taken steps to correct problems with the alleged violations, which were identified during a hazardous waste compliance evaluation.
Those violations were related to hazardous waste air emissions, design and installation requirements for hazardous waste tank systems, equipment inspections, waste and storage area labeling, and contingency planning, according to the EPA.
Officials at Nitto Denko Avecia could not immediately be reached for comment.
To address the issues, the EPA said the manufacturer implemented a leak detection and repair program, performed daily visual inspections of all relevant tank systems, and updated its hazardous waste contingency plan.
“This agreement with Nitto Avecia serves as a reminder to pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturers about their duties and commitments to federal and state regulations that protect workers, communities, and the environment,” EPA New England Regional Administrator Mark Sanborn said in a statement.
Nitto Denko Avecia employs approximately 400 people.
