Devens-based Commonwealth Fusion Systems is looking to expand on its existing presence in MassDevelopment’s regional enterprise zone of Devens through the construction of new facilities and a new parking garage to accommodate an influx of workers.
CFS intends to construct new research facilities, new manufacturing and office space, and a new parking garage at its campus on Hospital Road, according to information submitted to the Devens Enterprise Commission.
CFS is planning to construct a heat transfer research facility at the site, part of its efforts to advance the commercial adoption of fusion energy. The site will be used to better understand how to transfer the large amount of heat energy produced by fusion reactions to generate steam, according to permit materials submitted to DEC.
The company intends to start construction on the research facility in the spring, with the building opening in phases, beginning in April 2027.
As the company has begun installing magnets into its SPARC, its initial fusion energy machine based in Devens, CFS is ramping up its manufacturing capabilities, planning a 294,100-square-foot office and manufacturing at the campus.
The company has surpassed its initial employee headcount projections during the original permitting of the campus, now employing approximately 700 workers at the site. Expecting to add an additional 100-150 employees at the site over the next three to five years, the company intends to build a 600-spot parking garage, as well as creating an additional 57 surface spaces.
The new manufacturing and office facility will be owned and developed by an entity related to Pivotal Manufacturing Partners, one of two groups which bought part of the CFS campus for $74 million in September. The new research facility will be on land still owned by CFS.
CFS held a grand opening for its Devens campus in 2023, after working with Boston-based King Street Properties to develop the site.
