State Attorney General Martha Coakley has settled with Cedardale Inc., the Haverhill-based operator of largest health club facility in New England, over chlorine discharged to the Merrimack River.
Cedardale will pay $20,000, and promised to direct discharge from its pools or children’s “sprayground” to the Haverhill wastewater treatment plant.
The settlement is the result of a complaint related to an incident in the summer of 2004, when Cedardale was accused of discharging chlorine from the sprayground into a brook that feeds the Merrimack. The state Department of Environmental Protection found that the discharge to the river, Cedardale’s second such violation since 2002, killed fish and other aquatic life.
