Fresh off an acquisition streak, Marlborough medical device manufacturer Boston Scientific has appointed two new heavyweight members to its board of directors.
Cathy Smith and Christophe Weber joined Boston Scientific’s board on Wednesday, according to a Monday press release from the firm.
Smith serves as the CFO of Starbucks while Weber works as the president and CEO of Takeda Pharmaceutical, a Tokyo-based R&D biopharma company and is Massachusetts’ largest life sciences employer.
“Each brings deep leadership experience, strategic insight and a strong track record of value creation that will support our continued focus on innovation, disciplined growth and improving patient care worldwide,” Mike Mahoney, Boston Scientific chairman and CEO, said in the release.
The addition of Smith and Weber raises the number of Boston Scientific board members from 10 to 12, according to a Monday filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Smith has served in CFO capacities at major defense and retail establishments throughout her 40-year career, including Nordstrom, Target, Walmart, DICK’S Sporting Goods, and Raytheon, according to LinkedIn profile.
Weber assumed the roles of president and COO of Takeda in 2014, before quickly being promoted to CEO in 2015. He is set to retire in June.
Smith graduated from the University of Southern California with her master’s degree and from University of California, Santa Barbara with her bachelor’s degree.
Weber graduated from Université de Lyon in France with his doctorate in pharmacy and holds an advanced degree in accounting and finance.
In addition to their spots on the board, Smith was named to its audit committee and the nominating and governance committee on Monday while Weber was added to its executive compensation and human resources committee and the risk, science and technology committee, according to the filing.
Boston Scientific is Central Massachusetts’ second-largest manufacturer with 2,800 local employees as of the first quarter 2025, according to data collected by WBJ’s Research Department.
