Bose makes second acquisition of year with deal for game-audio developer

Framingham’s Bose Corp. has acquired an Australian firm focused on software that lets video game developers create sound and music that change in real time as a player moves through a virtual environment.

Bose disclosed the purchase in a Thursday announcement, saying the acquisition of Melbourne-based Firelight Technologies was part of a larger strategy of growth in the audio technology space.

“Gaming represents a significant opportunity for our continued growth, and we believe our audio expertise can help creators deliver even better experiences for players,” Nick Smith, president of Bose Audio Technology and chief strategy officer, said in the announcement. “Alongside our other recent investments, Firelight broadens the capabilities we’re bringing to partners and presents new opportunities for future innovation.”

Bose said financial terms and other aspects of the deal will remain private.

Firelight is the creator of FMOD, a package of audio tools and technologies utilized by the video game industry to create and implement adaptive audio. FMOD has been used in games including “Minecraft Legends,” “Rise of the Tomb Raider,” “Untitled Goose Game,” and “Forza Horizon 5,” according to the company’s website.

Bose said the acquisition will create new opportunities in the gaming space while also unlocking possibilities for other uses of immersive audio experiences, including virtual reality and automotive applications.

This is Bose’s second international acquisition of the year, having purchased an Austrian firm focused on audio and smart-home technologies in June.
