Northborough-based Apsen Aerogels will install its high-tech insulation on an undersea oil pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico.
Aspen was awarded the contract to insulate the pipe-in-pipe system by Helix Energy Solutions Group. Because Aspen’s insulation is very thin, the pipeline’s outer pipe can be smaller, which saves weight and costs less.
The Gulf project includes the insulation of 21 kilometers of pipe and is scheduled to begin later this year.
