Anthropologie Group opens its first home and garden location in Massachusetts

Home and garden lifestyle brand Terrain opened its first Massachusetts location in Wayland on Wednesday at the former site of a Whole Foods Market.

Terrain’s new location at the Wayland Village plaza at 297 Boston Post Road includes a retail store, cafe, and event venue, the firm announced Wednesday. The store sells home, garden, decor, holiday, and outdoor living products.

Framingham-based Grossman Development Group purchased the site for $6.68 million in October, with plans to redevelop the site.

The new Terrain location includes a farm-to-table cafe, an event hall for more than 175 guests, and a plant nursery. The company markets the event space for weddings, corporate events, and other similar gatherings. 

Terrain is owned by Pennsylvania-based URBN, the parent company of brands that include Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie. Terrain operates under URBN’s Anthropologie Group.

Anthropologie Group Global CEO Tricia Smith said Greater Boston has long been an important market for the company, with Terrain’s immersive retail experiences playing an important role in the firm’s growth strategy. 

Terrain’s three other locations featuring event spaces are all located in Pennsylvania, with other smaller stores across the country. 

Whole Foods closed its location there in 2017, as it opened a larger and more modern store in nearby Sudbury. The plaza dates back to 1961 and received a 2026 assessment of $5.44 million, according to Town of Wayland property records.
