Westborough-based American Superconductor Corp. and TECO-Westinghouse Motor Company Inc., a Texas-based manufacturer of electric motors, have formed a joint research venture to develop technologies for wind generators and offshore wind farms.
The two companies were awarded a $3.4 million grant from the National Institute of Science and Technology, to help offset the $6.8 million cost of the joint research project, the companies said.
Among the technologies being explored by the two companies is high temperature superconductor wire, which will enable the development of smaller, lighter and more efficient wind generator systems.
