Southbridge Credit Union: Committed to Our Community

In recent years, banking has evolved from an impersonal, strictly business-like environment to a user-friendly, comfortable atmosphere where employees are more like friends and customer relationships are the order of the day. Southbridge Credit Union has wholeheartedly embraced this new model, much to the delight of its members.

For the last 85 years, the Southbridge Credit Union, a not-for-profit, member-owned financial institution, has operated on the core belief that doing good in the community fosters growth from within. In keeping with that principle, SCU offers a broad portfolio of financial products to its personal and commercial members. But more important, SCU can be found in and around the community helping to build relationships.

At SCU, members have the opportunity to take out a new mortgage, purchase an auto or recreational vehicle loan, refinance any existing loan, and open a home equity line of credit (HELOC) that provides a low-interest option for homeowners’ expenses.

On the commercial side, SCU is dedicated to finding competitive loan products to finance members’ business needs, and to investing in products to help their businesses grow.

At the heart of SCU’s culture is giving back. Employees and board members are true members of the community — coaches, friends, and neighbors. As an active mother of four, CEO Kate Theodoss has served as a youth sports coach, a school committee member, and board member for various local organizations. She encourages volunteerism among her employees as well, from building playhouses for Habitat for Humanity, to surprising teachers with food truck lunches, to identifying local heroes and thanking them randomly. Their focus is always on building strength in the community beyond membership. Annually, SCU partners with other non-profit organizations to host pet adoption days; school supply, book, and toy drives; charity golf tournaments; college scholarships; holiday raffles; and Cops ’N’ Kids events. Last year alone, SCU donated more than $7,000 to local scholarship drives.

Since 1938, Southbridge Credit Union has brought beneficial financial services to Southbridge and surrounding towns. “We’re driven to change banking through innovative services, top notch customer service and a commitment to empower our members to make the best financial decisions,” said Theodoss. “Over the next few months, we are working to change banking, building the ultimate banking experience. Features like partnering with popular fintech companies to offer members more flexible services, simplifying loan and product applications for faster review, and enhancing our in-bank and online experience will make members’ lives easier.”

SCU members praise the personalized service they receive from every employee. “We work in the member’s best interest,” Theodoss said. “At Southbridge Credit Union, we’ve got you.”
