Abby’s House is nearly finished with a $16.2-million renovation of its High Street women’s homeless apartment complex in Worcester.
The project began in February 2018 and included adding two units and making the entire building handicapped accessible with a new elevator system. Three units are now ADA compliant.
The building’s electrical, plumbing, heating and windows have all been upgraded.
“As Worcester continues to grow, so does the need for safe and affordable housing,” said Stephanie Page, executive director of Abby’s House. “The women who live here would face homelessness without this opportunity. Many already have and now reside at Abby’s House and this renovation to our facilities makes it so many more will have the opportunity in the future.”
A total of 19 residents moved into the facility since January, and another 20 will move in over the next two months.
The project to rehabilitate the 108-year-old building was aided by an $8.2-million tax-exempt bond from MassDevelopment.
According to Worcester property records, the structure was built in 1910, but Page told WBJ last year the building was erected in the 1920s by the Sisters of Mercy and was turned over to Abby's House in 2001.
According to Page, the organization knew the building needed extensive upgrades. A project was planned in 2006 but was abandoned just a year later due to the economic recession.
The project was revived in 2014, and the organization raised more than $2 million for the project.
