Two Central Mass. healthcare organizations are joining an alliance of 10 independent health systems with 14 hospitals to improve performance and keep healthcare costs down.
Harrington HealthCare in Southbridge and Heywood Healthcare in Gardner will join the Massachusetts Value Alliance, which seeks to develop group purchasing and shared service arrangements, share best practices to lower healthcare costs, and support the development of population health management and care coordination.
The MVA was founded in 2016 by Emerson Hospital in Concord, Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleborough and South Shore Health in Weymouth.
Aside from Heywood and Harrington, membership now includes Berkshire Health Systems, Holyoke Medical Center, Lawrence General Hospital, Signature Healthcare and Southcoast Health.
According to the group, the MVA is the largest collaboration of independent healthcare providers in the state with a combined $3.1 billion in total revenue, serving about 2 million people.
Ed Moore, president and CEO of Harrington HealthCare, said in a statement community hospitals are struggling to leverage vendors to provide aggressive and competitive pricing.
“Through the alliance, Harrington has been able to achieve significant savings in several areas including IT, purchased services and equipment,” Moore said. “Beyond the financial benefits, it has created a partnership between similar organizations which allows us to collectively evaluate options and ensure we are making the best decisions for our communities.”
