The Worcester Redevelopment Authority is set to begin the process of acquiring land needed for the planned $101-million ballpark in the Canal District for the incoming Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
The WRA, which is overseeing the overall $240-million mixed-use project, on Friday will be asked to approve an order of taking to acquire 50 Washington St., 127 Washington St. and 134 Madison St.
The 50 Washington St. property includes a 6,900-square-foot warehouse building and is owned by Serena E. Massey Trustee. It was last assessed for $275,800.
Paul’s Auto Glass occupies the 127 Washington St. property in a 1,252-square-foot building. It was last assessed for $161,600. Paul Harrington is listed as the owner.
The Sublime Co., a smokeshop at 134 Madison St., occupies the 2,000-square-foot building. It was last assessed for $153,900.
In total, the properties only add up to about 0.83 acres.
Chief Development Office Michael Traynor has previously said the WRA has submitted offers for some of the properties. On Wednesday, Traynor said just one of the properties will be sold at an agreed-upon price. The other two will end up going through the eminent domain process.
The WRA must acquire at least seven properties for the ballpark: the three on Friday’s agenda and 90 Washington St., 62 Washington St., and 2 Plymouth St.
The city has said three more vacant parcels toward Green Street – 5, 7, and 6 Gold St. – would be listed for the possibility of future action.
The Pawtucket Red Sox announced in August the team would move to Worcester beginning with the 2021 season. The city, team and developer Madison Downtown Holdings are partnering on the overall $240-million project with hotels, restaurants, apartments, retail use and a 10,000-seat ballpark.
Madison Downtown Holdings has already moved on the land it needs for its part of the project, spending $6.1 million last month to acquire the Wyman-Gordon properties. Part of that property will be conveyed to the city for the ballpark.
