Worcester officials have formally asked the Worcester Redevelopment Authority to select a joint venture of Providence-based Gilbane Building Co. and Los Angeles-based AECOM Hunt as construction manager of the $101-million Polar Park.
Both firms have extensive experience working on complex ballpark projects across the country, especially at the minor league level, according to a press release from the city.
The WRA will vote on the matter next week.
The two companies could enter a project needing to get started quickly. Groundbreaking is expected in July, and the project needs to be finished in time for the Pawtucket Red Sox to begin playing Worcester baseball by April 2021.
Gilbane’s portfolio includes projects at the home of the team’s Major League affiliate, Fenway Park, and Progressive Field in Cleveland. In Worcester, the firm has completed 20 projects including the sports center, playing fields, parking facilities and a residence hall at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
The firm has worked on the Worcester County Superior Court building, the parking garage at Union Station and North High School.
Hunt’s ballpark work includes nine Triple-A stadiums across the country and more than 30 Major League facilities.
The two firms have partnered successfully in the past as Gilbane-Hunt, most notably the Connecticut Convention Center and Rentschler Field for the University of Connecticut.
In a statement, City Manager Edward Augustus called the ballpark team, including architecture firms D’Agostino Izzo Quirk Architects and the owner’s project manager Skanska, an all-star ballpark construction team.
Representatives of those firms were part of a selection committee helping decide on Gilbane-Hunt. Although the team itself did not have a vote, it acknowledged Gilbane-Hunt’s deep experience in sports and baseball infrastructure.
“Their impressive resume of work both nationally, and locally here in Worcester, really speaks for itself,” Augustus said.
