Gymboree liquidation to close four Central Mass. stores

Gymboree is expected to close locations in the Auburn Mall, the Solomon Pond Mall in Marlborough, Natick Mall and Brookside Shops in Acton.
The children's clothing store Gymboree has filed for bankruptcy and will close all of its stores, including four in Central Massachusetts.
The stores due to close are in the Auburn Mall, the Solomon Pond Mall in Marlborough, Natick Mall and Brookside Shops in Acton. Gymboree's Janie and Jack chain, which also has a location at the Natick Mall, will not close.
The California-based retail has around 900 Gymboree stores in all. The company didn't say when the closures might take place. It listed both its assets and its liabilities at between $50 million and $100 million.
The impending closures add to other broad retail closures in Central Massachusetts and beyond recently.
Walmart closed its Sam's Club location in Worcester in early 2018, and just months later, Toys "R" Us announced it would close stores in Auburn, Bellingham Leominster, Framingham, Millbury and Northborough.
A dozen other storefronts have closed across the area in recent years with the shuttering of retailers Linens 'n Things, Sports Authority and Circuit City, among others. Shaw's announced this week it is closing its Leominster location.
Sears locations, on the other hand, appear to be safe for now, as the struggling retail has hung on. Sears has locations in Auburn, Leominster, Marlborough and Shrewsbury. Kmart, which is owned by Sears, has locations in Acton and Webster.
