Greater Worcester Community Foundation gives $1.7M to area nonprofits
The Greater Worcester Community Foundation has given more than $1.7 million to area nonprofits for its 2018 community grants, a 21-percent increase from what it awarded last year.
The grants went to 139 Central Massachusetts organizations. Of those, 22 were dedicated solely to projects focused on early childhood development.
The largest recipient, United Way of Central Massachusetts, received $78,000 for its YouthConnect program and a summer learning program. Among the other largest recipients, Edward Street Child Services received $75,000 for early childhood education and a master teacher consultation program.
Family Health Center of Worcester received nearly $70,000 for several initiatives, including a health care for homeless families program, a nutrition program and a dental program for uninsured or under-insured individuals.
The YWCA of Central Massachusetts was given $37,500, including for a racial equity program and domestic violence services. Ascentria Community Services received $25,000 for an immigration legal assistance program, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/Metrowest received $20,000 for its Worcester area mentoring program, and the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester was given $25,000 for its youth development programs.
Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester received $27,500 for English language literacy programs for immigrants and refugees, including those seeking jobs and parents helping schoolchildren.
