Engineering firm VHB to leave Union Station for Mercantile Center

National engineering firm VHB has signed a long-term lease for nearly 9,000 square feet of office space at the Mercantile Center.
The Watertown engineering, science, planning and design firm will occupy the fifth floor at 120 Front St. beginning next month, moving its Worcester office down the street from its current location at Union Station.
The firm signed a five-and-a-half-year lease to occupy 8,700 square feet in the building. Financial terms were not disclosed.
VHB, with has 450 employees in Massachusetts with three other satellite offices, will bring 30 of its employees to the Mercantile Center.
Chip Norton, developer of the Mercantile Center, said the move underscores the downtown area’s appeal to businesses.
The 120 Front St. building is now more than 60 percent leased and the 100 Front St. tower is about 90 percent leased, he said.
“We’re excited about the work we’ve done,” he said. “The market is responding to that. There’s a lot of interest and a lot of activity.”
Norton said there are ongoing negotiations for more retail and office space to fill the remaining space.
In a statement, VHB Principal and Worcester office manager Justin Dufresne said the firm is excited to relocate the office close to City Hall, new retail, restaurants and entertainment.
“For us, it’s an important step in our long-term growth in the area and dedication to Worcester,” he said.
The Worcester Redevelopment Authority has been working to get new tenants into Union Station, most notably the state's Cannabis Control Commission.
