Former legislator tapped for UMMHC post

Jim Leary, a former state representative from Worcester, has been named the new vice president of government and community relations for UMass Memorial Health Care.
A former Worcester state representative and chief of staff to then-Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray has been named the vice president of government and community relations for UMass Memorial Health Care.
James Leary will begin his tenure Aug. 27, replacing Christopher Philbin, who left the position in June, UMass announced Wednesday.
Leary has spent the last nine years as vice chancellor for community and government relations at the UMass Medical School. Before that, he was chief of staff to Murray and senior advisor to Deval Patrick when Patrick was governor. He also served as state representative for the 14th Worcester District, which includes parts of Worcester, Holden and West Boylston.
In his new role, Leary will provide UMass Memorial Health Care with policy direction and coordinate the system's government affairs initiatives on matters relating to state and federal governments. He will lead UMass' advocacy efforts working with federal, state and local authorities.
UMass Memorial Health Care President and CEO Eric Dickson called Leary ideal for the position, based on Leary's experience and knowledge of local and state government and his close relationship with the health system through his years working for UMass Medical School.
“The healthcare landscape continues to evolve with the more significant changes taking place at the state and federal levels," Dickson said. "We will look to Jim to give us a voice in the statehouse and to help us to maintain our important relationships with elected officials from all levels of government.”
