Now available at Apex Center: Axe-throwing!

Courtesy Half Axe, a new tenant at the Apex Entertainment Center in Marlborough, lets visitors throw axes. Safely, of course.

Visitors to the Apex Entertainment Center in Marlborough can already go bowling, race go-karts, play bumper carts or laser tag, traverse a ropes course and try mastering arcade games.

Now they can play lumberjack.

Half Axe is opening its doors at 10 a.m. Saturday as the latest of several tenants in the Apex Entertainment Center, a sprawling two-story facility also hosting a Title Boxing Club, Planet Fitness, Goldfish Swim School, Breakout, an escape room outlet, and MindTrek VR, a virtual reality gaming center. Altitude Trampoline Park is slated to open there.

Derek Johnson, the president and co-founder of Half Axe, said the center is one of the first of its kinds in New England. He discovered the activity while in the Montreal area and decided to find opportunities to bring axe-throwing to Massachusetts.

Axe-throwing is just as it sounds. People throw hatchets weighing 1.5 pounds at wooden targets 15 feet away. Half Axe has monitors guiding each party through the process.

Visitors must be 18 or older and must show identification upon arrival. Walk-in sessions are $28 per person for an hour, and advanced bookings are $42.50 per person for two and a half hours. The facility says it takes safety very seriously and does not allow alcohol.

Apex Entertainment Center is part of the Apex Center of New England, a complex on Route 20 including a Hyatt Place and Fairfield Inn & Suites, and several restaurants, such as Friendly's, 110 Grill, Evviva Cucina, Hot Table and Chick-fil-A. At least two other restaurants, Protein House and Qdoba Mexican Eats, are expected to open soon.
