A New York biotech company said Monday it has entered into a lease with the UMass Medicine Science Park in Worcester for a manufacturing facility.
Mustang Bio, Inc, a subsidiary of Fortress Biotech, Inc., announced the lease Monday. The facility will support the company’s clinical development and commercialization of the company’s chimeric antigen receptor engineered T (CAR T) cell technology, Mustang Bio said.
The company and UMass are not disclosing the terms of the lease or the size of the facility, said William Kelleher, a principal at real estate firm Kelleher & Sadowsky, which represents the science park. The building Mustang Bio is renting at 377 Plantation St. is 92,000-square-feet, but it's not clear how much space the company is leasing.
The 470,000-square-foot UMass Medicine Science Park is adjacent to UMass Memorial Medical Center and UMass Medical School, on the other side of Plantation Street.
The facility will be operational for the production of personalized CAR T therapies sometime next year to support CAR T use for certain types of brain tumors, leukemia and blood cancers.
In a statement included in a press release, Mustang Bio President and CEO Manuel Litchman called the Science Park one of the nation’s leading centers for biotech research and manufacturing.
“We are thrilled to announce this important milestone, which lays the foundation for the clinical development and potential commercialization of our CAR T pipeline, and may expedite manufacturing innovations to improve patient outcomes,” Litchman said.
