A brewery and taproom will open in downtown Marlborough later this year with the help of financing from the city’s economic development agency.
The brewery, Walden Woods Brewing, will be owned by Chris Brown and Alida Orzechowski, brewers with a combined 20 years of experience in the field. The name Walden Woods is inspired by Henry David Thoreau and his time at Walden Pond.
“The city has so much to offer a small business like ours – a vibrant downtown, a diverse population, tons of free parking, and especially the city’s ongoing commitment to economic development,” said Brown in a press release.
Walden Woods is the first brewery to take advantage of a program through the Marlborough Economic Development Corp. giving brewers and restaurateurs $25,000 for rent and equipment expenses to establish themselves in the city.
Since the MEDC announced its desire to attract a brewpub to the city in May, the response has been tremendous, said MEDC Executive Director Meredith Harris. However, Walden Woods is the first thus far to actually come through on their plans to come to Marlborough.
Production will begin in the fall, and a taproom is scheduled to open by the end of the year at 277 Main St., according to MEDC.
