In the latest example of growing interest in College of the Holy Cross sports, the Crusaders will host the Fordham University Rams at Yankee Stadium this weekend in the 31st Ram-Crusader Cup.
"Having the opportunity this year to play a game at Yankee Stadium is something our players will remember long after their football careers are over. This will be a special event for everyone involved: our student-athletes, coaches and our fans on the biggest stage in an atmosphere similar to that of a bowl game,” Holy Cross director of athletics Nathan Pine, said in a statement.
The Ram-Crusader Cup is played in memory of Major Frank W. Cavanaugh, who was an outstanding figure in football, coaching both Fordham and Holy Cross. The series between Fordham and Holy Cross was interrupted after the 1954 season when Fordham dropped football, but was resumed in 1990 when the Rams joined the Crusaders as members of the Patriot League.
Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The game represents a continued elevation of sports for the Worcester college. Holy Cross' NCAA March Madness appearance and subsequent first-round win put a focus on the school’s sports while a new $87 million athletics center is in the process of being built.
