Worcester Airport gets $1.4M for runway lighting

Rick Saia JetBlue officials disembark a plane at Worcester Regional Airport in 2013.

The Worcester Airport will have new runway lighting for enhanced safety thanks to a $1.4-million grant announced Monday from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The grant for $1,443,188 will fund lighting on the taxiway to enhance operation during low-visibility conditions, according to the office of U.S. Rep. James McGovern (D-MA).

Low visibility caused by fog has been an ongoing issue at the airport, prompting numerous flights to be diverted to Boston.

This is the latest round of FAA funding for the airport, which recently received $3 million for a firefighting station and $2.7 million last year for the construction of a taxiway, reducing the need to taxi back on the runway.
