The Worcester-based medical device company Interscope has received European Union approval to market its endoscopic device, and the U.S. Patent Office awarded the company five patents.
The EU approval of the company’s EndoRotor System, an endoscopic device that streamlines interventional gastrointestinal procedures used manage colon and esophageal cancer, is a milestone for the company. But the news isn’t just good for the company, but also for the Worcester-based Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP), which supported the start-up and helped it bring its products to commercialization. Boston Engineering was also involved, driving the product development and design for manufacturing (DFM) process including feasibility and analysis; industrial design; rapid prototyping; and product engineering.
“Many young companies face business needs that are often not paired well with available resources. The partnership that MassMEP and Boston Engineering presented enabled a dream to take reality in a challenging and dynamic regulatory environment,” Interscope President and Co-Founder Jeffery Ryan said in a statement.
Interscope used this early-stage support to advance its business, which included selecting Boston Engineering to develop the product.
“MassMEP plays an important role in Massachusetts growth by supporting the commercialization of technologies that have the potential to change the way that people work and live,” said Mark Smithers, co-founder and chief technology officer (CTO) of Boston Engineering. “Interscope’s five patents to date reflect the company’s innovative approach to addressing clinical needs.”
Interscope was co-founded by two Massachusetts-based entrepreneurs. Company president and CEO Jeffery Ryan Jr. previously held several senior sales and marketing positions in the medical devices industry. And for the past nine years, Interscope Chief Scientific Officer Ramon Franco, MD has been the Division Director for Laryngology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
