U.S. veterans with spinal cord injuries will now have access to ReWalk Robotics' exoskeleton systems, following a decision by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The decision will allow veterans to be evaluated, go through training on ReWalk’s exoskeleton system and then ultimately have the system procured for them by the VA, according to ReWalk, which has U.S. headquarters in Marlborough. While the system was recently approved by certain commercial insurers, this marks its first coverage through a national insurance policy. ReWalk CEO Larry Jasinski said that this will provide life changing equipment to veterans, and will hopefully pave the way for more national insurance coverage of the system.
ReWalk Robotics is the first company to bring an exoskeleton to market after approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is a robotic system that allows users to walk upright as an alternative to a wheelchair.
The ReWalk has a list price of $71,000.
