A Framingham-based biopharmaceutical company wants to expand its operations in Marlborough, with plans to add 50 jobs within the next decade, according to documents provided to the Worcester Business Journal.
LFB USA, part of the European biopharmaceutical company LFB Group, is planning a 65,000-square-foot expansion on what is now vacant land on Crowley Drive, according to a letter to the City Council from Mayor Arthur Vigeant.
LFB is also seeking a tax break from the city. In documents filed with the state’s Economic Assistance Coordinating Council, the company is pursuing full or partial tax credits – through a tax increment financing agreement, or TIF - over seven years beginning in 2016, a year before it expects to open the facility.
“LFB chose to expand in Marlborough due to our access to a well-educated workforce with a high degree of knowledge within the life science sector and our transportation access,” Vigeant wrote in his letter to City Council President Edward J. Clancy.
This is another in a string of economic development wins for Marlborough over the past several years. Since 2011, the city has welcomes an expansion of the Framingham-based TJX Cos. and become the new headquarters for Boston Scientific, formerly of Natick, and GE Healthcare Life Sciences, which plans to employ about 500 relocated and new employees later this year at the former Hewlett-Packard campus on Forest Street. In addition, Hologic Inc., based in Bedford, plans to move its headquarters – and the estimated 150 jobs there – to Marlborough, joining about 450 employees already working at two sites in the city.
LFB’s U.S, operations are based on Crossings Boulevard in Framingham. It also has a facility in Charlton. LFB Group specializes in innovative biotherapies, marketing its medicinal products in more than 30 countries. LFB USA is a development, manufacturing and services provider to LFB S.A. in France and rEVO Biologics, also based in Framingham.
In its documents, LFB said the expansion will cost $37 million with a possible additional expansion costing another $13 million.
In his letter, Vigeant said the expansion will generate more than $711,000 in tax revenue for Marlborough, more than five times what it would generate if the land on Crowley Drive were to remain vacant.
