The state will spend an additional $2 million in rebates to residents who buy or lease electric vehicles, the Baker administration announced last week.
The rebate -$2,500 for full battery electric vehicles and $1,500 for plug-in hybrids- on top of the up to $7,500 existing federal tax credit for EVs, has helped more than 700 Massachusetts drivers make the switch from petroleum-powered vehicles to vehicles powered by cleaner-burning electricity, according to a separate statement from the Massachusetts Sierra Club, which praised the move.
"Electric vehicles have off-the-charts customer satisfaction ratings because they are fun to drive, and people love zooming right past the gas station," said Gina Coplon-Newfield, the club's director of electric vehicles, in the statement.
"We applaud this example of the Baker administration's investment in cleaner cars, healthier air, and a safer planet."
The program, called MOR-EV, was initially funded with $2 million in Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) auction proceeds, which also finance the new funding, according to a statement from the Mass. Department of Energy Resources (DOER).
The program has also increased business for dealers that sell electric vehicles, DOER said. The Nissan Leaf, Ford Focus EV and the Chevy Volt are the most popular vehicles being purchased or leased through the state program, and any Massachusetts resident is eligible for the rebate, DOER said.
