The Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the Regional Environmental Council to study the feasibility of creating a food hub in Worcester.
The yearlong study will examine options for bringing additional fresh, locally grown food into the city through direct-sale and commercial operations. Establishing such a hub would support the chamber’s mission by promoting the region’s agricultural producers and helping them reach consumers, according to a statement from the chamber.
The chamber is seeking input from area businesses in the study, as well as people to serve on the study’s steering committee. The project will officially kick off Feb. 19 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in an event at the Hanover Theatre.
Dr. Thomas H. Kelly, founding director of the UNH Sustainability Institute at the University of New Hampshire, will be the evening's keynote speaker. That will be followed by a panel discussion that will further explore what a food hub is and how is can improve the community. The event will also exhibit local sustainability projects, food producers and local restaurants.
The event is free, but registration with the Hanover Theatre is required.
