Who is your most influential role model and why?

My grandfather was an early influential role model. He taught me how to have moxie; the ability to face challenges with spirit and courage. “Pa” was street smart, inquisitive, kindhearted and genuinely enjoyed helping others. In the 1930s, he was one of the Boston City Council members and his role was to be the representative voice of the citizens. When I ran for student government at Assumption College, Pa suggested the slogan “Put 'Power' in your Vote!” I have carried this philosophy, focusing on empowering others.

What helped you achieve success in your career?

I have always enjoyed my work, which I think makes a significant difference in being successful. I am able to deal with a variety of people and challenging situations. I also seek to surround myself with people that are motivated, energetic and positive. I also accept my limitations and realize the strengths of others and try to build well-rounded teams. I have a common-sense approach and feel that there is always a workaround to solve a problem. I have also had the untiring support of my terrific husband, Ed as well as our families.

What’s your primary motivator; or is there one thing that makes you tick or ignites a passion within you?

I am motivated by helping others succeed in whatever way that means to them. I am driven by working in teams and building relationships through interactive discussions. I work well with a variety of people and am open to change. I am sincere, empathic, easygoing, but not a pushover. In a leadership role, you have to make tough decisions and you aren't necessarily liked by everyone. I try to understand where the other person is coming from and I think people view me as being fair. I am inspired when I see my efforts result in a reasonable outcome for both sides.

How does your organization give back to the community, and what role have you played in those efforts?

When I am in the community, I'm so proud to say that I'm part of Mirick O'Connell. Our firm recognizes that our lives are deeply enriched when we volunteer. Our way of giving back is through volunteering. We have a Charitable, Civic and Bar Committee that works to ensure we have involvement in all areas of need. Our attorneys and professional team serve as trustees, board members and directors at colleges, hospitals, nonprofits, chambers and bar associations. Our firm is involved in organizations such as the United Way of Central Mass, Community Legal Aid and American Heart Association. I participate in many of the events.

When the stress level gets too high, how do you ease the pressure?

I start my day at 5 a.m. by either heading to the gym or working in my yard as the sun rises. Both bring a different sense of calm. I enjoy gourmet cooking and entertaining on the weekends. Cooking is very relaxing for me and I find the planning, preparation and presentation is a creative outlet. I try to find the humor in stressful situations, which always adds levity. Since my role is to lead, I feel that it's up to me to set the tone for the team. Also, spending quality time with my son, Joseph, is an excellent stress reliever.

How have you tried to balance your career and your personal life? Please give an example or two.

My husband Ed and I were married for 15 years before we had our son Joseph, now 8. We were 43 and 45, respectively. We never needed to balance anything and were pretty set in our ways prior to Joseph's arrival. Boy, did life change! I'm fortunate that my sister has been the trusted, loving caretaker of our son. Since we both have demanding careers, we consciously carve out time to spend together whether it's early morning coffee or a dinner date. It's so important to connect. The introduction of stable remote access technologies has also provided me more balance.
