Title: Executive Editor, Equine Journal
Company location: North Oxford
Residence: Charlton
Favorite movie: “Seabiscuit”
Favorite book: “Anne of Green Gables”
Career highlights: I have been fortunate to not only meet, but also interview some of the top riders in the equine industry, including Olympic greats Margie Engle, Peter Leone, Leslie Howard and McLain Ward. Additionally, it has always been an honor to work with a number of talented writers and editors. Knowing that we’re publishing material that can make a difference in our readers’ lives and in those of a number of animals has been a huge accomplishment. From covering the controversy regarding New York City’s carriage horses to including information about the disbanding of the Boston Mounted Police Unit, I’ve always tried to ensure that our magazine includes groundbreaking news with the mission of educating our readers through unbiased articles. Because of this, we’ve won a few awards along the way.
Community involvement: I initiated our magazine’s incentive to donate lightly used tester products to local and national charities. To date, we’ve donated thousands of dollars’ worth of products to nonprofit organizations, including the Bay State Equine Rescue in Oakham.
Biggest success: Career-wise, conducting a video interview with Margie Engle at the Lake Placid Horse Show in Lake Placid, N.Y., has been my biggest feat. She has been a huge inspiration to me ever since I saw her compete at the Attitash Bear Peak Equine Festival when I was 9 years old. I admire her because she has humble beginnings, and is now one of the top-earning show jumpers of all time. Personally, my greatest accomplishment was marrying my husband, who has always supported me in my career. We just celebrated our seventh wedding anniversary in August.
Biggest challenge: In 2012, our parent company, Morris Communications, purchased the Equine Journal, which, at the time, was competitor to the Horsemen’s Yankee Pedlar, the magazine where I had worked. When they made the decision to combine the two staffs and keep the Equine Journal title, it was certainly difficult at the beginning. Despite our differences, we chose to make the readers and advertisers our top priority.
YOUR BEST Mentors: My parents can be credited for helping me develop a strong work ethic, and have always told me to follow my passion. And my husband has always been there for me, even accompanying me when I travel for business. (He has become quite the photographer and cameraman.)
Hidden talents: I’m not much of a speedster, but I’ve become quite good at running long distances. I might not be the first to cross the finish line, but I can run all day without stopping!
